Club Info

The Bay State Jaguars Basketball Club is a registered non-profit AAU basketball club for girls and boys between the ages of U10 and U17.  The majority of our players reside in the greater Boston Metropolitan area, specifically the “Metrowest” region. Over the past several years our program has expanded and in 2010 we have thirteen girls’ teams and ten boy’s teams taking the court. During the past few years the Jaguars have concentrated on putting together teams that could successfully compete on a State and National level.

Mission Statement

The Bay State Jaguars’ mission is to provide an excellent developmental basketball program in a competitive environment. The focus is on players who have a keen interest in basketball, who wish to improve their technical and team skills, and who have a desire to play competitively at the high school and perhaps the college level. We stress the development of sound basketball technique and team play. We encourage individual excellence in all our players.

The Bay State Jaguars are fortunate to have many superb coaches, both male and female, who absolutely love the game of basketball.  Experienced, responsible, dedicated, enthusiastic and technically competent, they help all players to reach the next level in their games.  While many of our coaches are parent volunteers, paid professionals coach some of our elite teams.

What is AAU?

AAU stands for the U.S. Amateur Athletic Union. In basketball, it is the state and nationwide program for the most competitive and committed players. The season runs from March to mid-June, however, some of our teams also play in the summer and fall.

The AAU program is entirely tournament based. Our teams enter an average of six weekend tournaments during the spring season.  An effort is made to spread tournaments evenly over the time span. A typical tournament consists of four games, two each day. Coaches are responsible for selecting a variety of tournaments for his/her team.  In addition, most of our teams practice twice a week for 1.5 to 2 hours each session.

Tryouts/Commitment/Selection of Teams

Coaches select their teams at tryouts held in January and February. Each age group will normally have two tryouts, typically spaced a week apart. It is recommended that interested players attend all tryouts.

Coaches will notify all participants of the tryout results via email or telephone.

The club is sensitive to the issue that many of our players may be participating in more than one athletic endeavor in any given season. We do wish to make it clear, however, that we are only seeking players that have a strong commitment to basketball and who are willing to devote the time and effort to improve their skills. While we recognize that many players play other spring sports, recreational players and those unsure of their desire to play the sport at a competitive level are not encouraged to join the club.

Playing Time

We believe that every player on each team should have playing time at every game that they attend.  Our coaches are not encouraged to carry players whom they do not expect to play, or expect to play only rarely. It should be understood, however, that playing time will certainly not be evenly distributed among all players, particularly in the State Championship, and that the coaches will be making their playing time decisions based on commitment, performance, effort and the circumstances of each game.

Geographic Area

The Bay State Jaguars welcome all players in Massachusetts that want to be a part of our program.  Although the club is based in the western suburbs of Boston, our players are from all over eastern Massachusetts. Examples include Acton, Brookline, Canton, Dedham, Dover, Franklin, Foxboro, Medfield, Medway, Melrose, Needham, Newton, Randolph, Sharon, Sherborn, Sudbury Wayland, Wellesley, Weston, and Westwood.
